NASA is celebrating the renaming of their DC Headquarters in honor of Mary W. Jackson, the first African American female engineer at NASA, who was also depicted in the film, Hidden Figures. Events DC asked six nationally-renowned DC artists to interpret this moment in history through their creative lens. Here are their stories of what this historical moment means to them.

Tenbeete Solomon, a.k.a. Trap Bob, is a visual artist, illustrator, and animator based in Washington, DC. She is known for her use of bold colors and gestures to convey both the humor and struggles of everyday life. Her work is socially conscious and frequently inspired by activism and community issues, with an aim to bridge the gap between her audience and her message. Her work can be found both in the digital space and within the community, from Instagram GIF stickers to permanent murals throughout DC. As the founder of Trap Bob World, LLC, a freelance design and product company, Tenbeete has worked with leading corporations, brands, and organizations including Giphy, Pabst Blue Ribbon, the Elizabeth Warren campaign, BET, and Refinery 29. As creative director of the women-centric creative collective GIRLAAA, Tenbeete leads the execution of all art design and exhibitions for events, promotional materials, and other collaborations.

Julia Chon, better known by her moniker “Kimchi Juice,” is a Washington, DC-based artist and muralist. Chon’s work merges her Korean ancestry and tradition with the contemporary, yielding portraits of strong women that celebrate and highlight their unique “otherness.” The portrait of Mary W. Jackson features the formulas in the dozen or so research papers she coauthored. As NASA’s first Black female engineer, her resiliency and perseverance led to innumerable contributions to the field of aerospace engineering and paved the way for women in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

Tracie Ching is an artist and self-taught illustrator working in Washington, DC. A marriage of old and new, her work translates classic engraving techniques through vector illustration, resulting in the bold cross-hatching style for which she is known. By creating alternative movie posters for cult classics, Ching made her home in pop culture, showing in galleries such as Spoke Art in San Francisco. She has since grown her portfolio to include key art for clients like Disney, Lionsgate, and Marvel Studios; official portraits for a President and Vice President; editorial illustration; and commercial art, rounding out her dynamic application of creative skill. Ching’s work has been shown in the Design Museum in London and is in the permanent collection of the Library of Congress.

Jennifer White-Johnson is an Afro-Latina, disabled designer, educator, and activist whose work explores the intersection of content and caregiving with an emphasis on redesigning ableist visual culture. The visuals she creates using photo and design are her own acts of resistance that amplify conversations with the disability community, igniting the continued need to develop anti-racist, anti-ableist media. Her activist work has been featured in the Washington Post, the New York Times, and AfroPunk, and it is permanently archived in libraries at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the National Museum of Women in the Arts. In 2020, she was selected as an honoree on the 2020 Diversability’s D-30 Disability Impact List. Currently, she teaches as an assistant professor of graphic design and visual culture at Bowie State University in Bowie, MD. Jen holds an M.F.A. in graphic design from the Maryland Institute College of Art and a B.A. in visual arts from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. Jamilla Okubo is an interdisciplinary artist exploring the intricacies of belonging to an American, Kenyan, and Trinidadian identity. Combining figurative painting, pattern/textile design, fashion, and storytelling, she celebrates the Black body in relation to movement, expression, ideology, and culture. Inspired by kanga cloth, which communicates messages derived from Swahili proverbs, quotes from the Qur’an, African folklore, and popular culture, Okubo creates her own patterns in reference to the history, mythology, and vernacular of the African diaspora. Her piece represents how the work of Mary Jackson opened portals for future generations of Black women who work in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) to have the opportunities that we have today.
